ISLAMABAD: The second phase of the Polio vaccination drive continued on Wednesday in 12 districts of Balochistan and 26 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

During the five-day campaign, more than 4.12 million children will be vaccinated in both provinces.

Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel urged parents to ensure their kids receive the life-saving polio vaccine to remain safe and protected from poliovirus.

He said that the presence of wild polio in the environment shows that it was circulating in the communities and posing a serious threat to the children.

Polio cases in KP

No human case has been reported in the country since September 2022, when a polio outbreak paralyzed twenty children – all in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s southern districts.

The dangerous virus was detected for the first time in 2023 in sewage samples collected from 2 separate sites in Lahore in January.

2 more samples have since then tested positive for the virus – wild polio has been detected in a sample collected from D.I. Khan, and a variant poliovirus has been detected from Ghotki.
