DAKAR, Senegal: Senegal’s newly inaugurated President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has emphasized the need for a redefined relationship with the European Union (EU) during a visit by European Council President Charles Michel. President Faye, elected on promises of radical reform and national sovereignty over key industries, seeks to reshape cooperation with Europe to support Senegal’s innovative agenda.

In a joint press conference with Michel, President Faye highlighted the dense and multifaceted nature of Senegal-EU cooperation but called for a “renovated partnership” capable of fostering the innovative dynamic his administration aims to bring to bilateral relations.

President Faye’s reform agenda includes renegotiating oil, gas, and fishing contracts, acknowledging the importance of these sectors to Senegal’s economy. The fishing industry, in particular, faces challenges due to overexploitation of marine resources.

Michel echoed the need to address challenging topics, emphasizing that constructive dialogue could lead to mutual improvements. He specifically mentioned fisheries as a crucial issue for discussion.

President Faye outlined his government’s development strategy, focusing on bolstering agriculture, livestock, and fishing, while also enhancing critical infrastructure like railways, electricity grids, telecommunications, and roads. He welcomed European investors with expertise in these sectors to contribute to Senegal’s development.

Michel emphasized Europe’s vested interest in Senegal’s development and economic emergence, emphasizing the importance of improving living conditions for the Senegalese people. This visit signifies Senegal’s commitment to forging a new path in its relationship with the EU under Faye’s leadership, aiming for a partnership that supports sustainable development and mutual prosperity.
