ISLAMABAD: The development, conservation, preservation, and restoration work underway at the Shah Alla Ditta Caves is a significant initiative by the Department of Archaeology & Museums (DOAM), National Heritage and Culture Division.

Declaring the site, a “Protected Antiquity” under the Antiquities Act 1975 demonstrates the government’s commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage.

According to an official, the scope of work being undertaken at the caves is comprehensive, ranging from archaeological excavation to landscaping. This includes documenting the site, conducting geotechnical studies, constructing drainage systems, and landscaping the area. These efforts aim to not only conserve and preserve the natural and man-made features of the caves but also to enhance their accessibility and overall visitor experience.

The description provided of the caves and their surroundings gives insight into their historical and cultural significance. The presence of natural rock shelters, hot water springs, and the remnants of human habitation, including painted murals and architectural features, underscores the rich heritage of the site.

The mention of Hindu families using the caves for worship before partition adds another layer of historical context to the site. Understanding the cultural and religious significance attached to the caves by different communities over time is crucial for their interpretation and conservation. —APP
