PARIS: Colombian sensation Shakira, renowned for her dynamic career in Latin music since the 2005 hit “Hips Don’t Lie,” is making a comeback following a highly publicized split from footballer Gerard Pique. However, the challenges for the Latina superstar are far from over, with all eyes on Barcelona as she prepares to appear in court on November 20 to face tax fraud charges.

Prosecutors are seeking a significant penalty for the 46-year-old artist, including an eight-year, two-month jail sentence and a fine approaching 24 million euros ($26 million). Shakira, often hailed as the queen of Latin music, previously resided in Barcelona with Pique.

Tax Fraud Allegations Against Shakira

The charges allege tax evasion of 14.5 million euros on income earned between 2012 and 2014, a claim firmly denied by Shakira. She maintains that she only became a full-time resident in Spain in 2015. In a legal battle that has garnered considerable attention, the singer will have an opportunity to present her case and defend against the allegations.

In a recent development, Shakira faces a second investigation into suspected tax fraud, amounting to approximately 6.6 million euros. The legal challenges add a layer of complexity to her life as she aims to make a professional comeback.

Currently residing in Miami with her two sons, Milan and Sasha, Shakira’s trial has become a focal point, bringing attention not only to her legal battles but also to the broader issue of tax compliance for high-profile individuals.
