LAHORE: Former interior minister and Awami Muslim League (AML) chief, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Sunday urged President Arif Alvi to announce the election date tomorrow (Monday) or resign from his office.

As per the constitution, the president can give an election date, said Sheikh Rashid while talking to media men in Lahore. He said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was yet undecided over contesting by-polls in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.

Rashid’s claim

Sheikh Rashid Ahmed claimed that elections in the provinces and centre will be held at the same time. “Only Supreme Court can save Pakistan after Allah,” he said. He claimed Pakistan has already ‘default’, the confirmation of which, he added, has also been made by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif. Rashid further said that calling fresh elections was the only solution to steer the country out of the present crises.

On Friday, President Dr. Arif Alvi invited Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja for an urgent meeting on the general elections. The invitation was sent for consultations on elections under Section 57(1) of the Elections Act, 2017.
