WASHINGTON: At least two persons were killed and five others sustained injuries in a shooting incident in Washington DC early Sunday morning, authorities said. Officials are actively searching for a suspect and have urged the public to assist in apprehending the perpetrator.

The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. near the intersection of 7th and P Street, Northwest, several blocks away from the White House, according to local US media reports. The victims, described as adults, sustained injuries, the severity of which has not been disclosed by the police.

In a statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the police provided a description of the suspect as a Black male with an average build, wearing light pants and a blue shirt. The suspect was last seen on foot heading south from the scene of the shooting.

Metropolitan Police Executive Assistant Chief Jeffrey Carroll urged anyone with information related to the incident or who may have witnessed it to contact the Metropolitan Police Department.

This latest shooting incident comes in the wake of a previous gun violence incident in Northeast Washington DC in February, where one person was fatally shot and three others sustained injuries. In that incident, police responded to the 1200 block of Raum Street, Northeast, where they found an injured person inside a location and another outside.
