Sindh Governor Administers Oath to Interim Chief Minister Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqar

KARACHI: Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori on Thursday administered the oath of office to the newly appointed Caretaker Chief Minister of Sindh, Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqar. The ceremony, held at Governor House in Karachi, was attended by outgoing Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, his cabinet members, and other dignitaries.

Prior to the oath-taking ceremony, an honorable guard of honor was accorded to the departing Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah as he bid farewell to his tenure at the provincial chief executive’s residence.

The selection of Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqar as the interim Sindh Chief Minister followed days of deliberation between the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in the province and the leader of the opposition of the dissolved assembly, Rana Ansar. Both parties, along with the representation of the Mutahidda Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), reached a consensus on appointing Justice (Retd) Baqar for the role.

Maqbool Baqar’s Experience

Justice (Retd) Baqar brings a distinguished legal career to his new role. He previously served as a senior judge at the Supreme Court of Pakistan, earning accolades for his dedication to justice and courageous stance against terrorism. Notably, he withstood a targeted attack by a terrorist outfit due to his unwavering judicial verdicts against terrorists.

Throughout his career, Justice (Retd) Baqar exhibited a commitment to upholding the principles of justice. His judgements in terrorism cases led to his recognition and respect in the legal community. Despite facing threats and adversity, his dedication to the rule of law remained unwavering.

Born on April 5, 1957, Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqar embarked on his legal journey after obtaining his LLB from the University of Karachi. His ascendancy within the judiciary culminated in his appointment as the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court in September 2013. Subsequently, he ascended to the position of a senior judge in the Supreme Court of Pakistan before his retirement in April 2022.
