BEIJING, China: Snow that fell overnight across a significant portion of northern China led to road closures and the suspension of Monday’s classes and train services.

CCTV reported that a red alert for a blizzard in Zhengzhou, Henan’s capital, resulted in school closures in the city and two others within the province. The shutdown extended to Zhengzhou airport, closed until 11 a.m. Simultaneously, CCTV disclosed that 134 road segments across 12 provinces, including 95 on highways, shut down by 7 a.m. due to snow and icy conditions. Furthermore, train services in segments of Shanxi province faced suspension.

The snowfall marked the first substantial one of the year for most of China, excluding mountainous regions and the northeastern border near Siberia, Russia. Beijing saw a light layer of snow on rooftops and cars, with cleared roads and workers tidying the remaining snow from sidewalks.

Monday morning saw the suspension of 187 bus routes by the Beijing Public Transport Group, while some subway lines increased trains for the morning rush, as reported by CCTV.
