HAMILTON: During the third day’s tea break of the second Test between South Africa and New Zealand, David Bedingham was on the verge of achieving his maiden Test century.

The Proteas, aiming to level the series, had extended their lead to 217 runs. Bedingham, batting at 88 off 108 balls, alongside Keegan Petersen on 33, guided South Africa to a score of 186-4 in Hamilton. Their partnership of 65 runs off 19 overs came after the dismissal of Zubayr Hamza for 17, caught by Neil Wagner.

Bedingham showcased his prowess with 10 boundaries and two sixes, exhibiting a diverse range of shots. Bedingham’s innings was vital for South Africa’s aspirations. His partnership with Petersen thwarted New Zealand’s attack, particularly in the absence of a specialist spinner.

Despite a shaky start in their second innings, South Africa managed to gain a 31-run lead after bowling out New Zealand for 211. However, the opening experiment with wicketkeeper Clyde Fortuin failed once more, contributing to South Africa’s early struggles.

New Zealand’s debutant Will O’Rourke continued to impress, claiming crucial wickets including that of South Africa captain Brand. With New Zealand eyeing their first Test series victory against South Africa, the under-strength Proteas are determined to turn the tide with a much-needed win.
