CHITTAGONG: Asitha Fernando claimed 4-34 as Sri Lanka bowled out Bangladesh for 178 to take a massive 353-run lead in the first innings of the second Test in Chittagong on Monday.

Fernando’s remarkable spell of 4-34 helped Sri Lanka dismiss Bangladesh for 178 runs, securing a substantial 353-run lead in the first innings. However, Sri Lanka’s batting woes persisted as they struggled to capitalize on their advantage, reaching a modest 102-6 at stumps on the third day, extending their lead to 455 runs.

Debutant pacer Hasan Mahmud provided some respite for Bangladesh with a commendable 4-51, while Khaled Ahmed also posed challenges for the Sri Lankan batters, claiming 2-29.

Despite the batting difficulties, Angelo Mathews stood firm with an unbeaten 39 alongside Prabath Jayasuriya, aiming to bolster Sri Lanka’s lead with support from the lower order.

Earlier in the match, Sri Lanka’s fast bowlers, including Lahiru Kumara and Fernando, made significant contributions, clinching nine wickets in two sessions to leave the hosts reeling.

Reflecting on the match, Sri Lanka’s fast bowling coach Dharshana Gamage commended the impressive performances from both teams’ bowlers, expressing confidence in Sri Lanka’s ability to capitalize on their lead in the upcoming sessions.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s batting lineup struggled to make an impact, with Zakir Hasan’s 54 being the highest individual score. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and other key batsmen failed to deliver, contributing to Bangladesh’s disappointing total.

Bangladesh faced setbacks as Sri Lanka’s bowlers continued to apply pressure, leading to wickets falling in quick succession. Asitha Fernando’s crucial breakthroughs ultimately dismantled Bangladesh’s resistance, securing Sri Lanka’s dominant position in the match.
