TOKYO, Japan: Takerufuji, aged 24, has carved his name into sumo folklore by clinching victory in his inaugural tournament in the top division, a feat unseen for over a century.

Despite grappling with an ankle injury that left him wheelchair-bound just a day earlier, Takerufuji emerged triumphant on Sunday at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament in Osaka, overcoming the formidable Gonoyama.

His rise to the summit of the traditional sport has captivated enthusiasts worldwide. Remarkably, Takerufuji’s ascension to glory marks the swiftest progression ever witnessed in sumo.

This landmark win, achieved in only his 10th championship appearance and a mere 18 months after stepping into the sacred “dohyo” ring, echoes the feat last recorded in 1914.

In adherence to tradition, Takerufuji, also known as Mikiya Ishioka, was feted with a jubilant parade through the streets of Osaka, riding in an open-top car as crowds erupted in celebration.

Reflecting on his journey, Takerufuji revealed moments of doubt when grappling with his ankle injury, only to be buoyed by words of encouragement from the esteemed yokozuna.

Describing his victory as a “far-fetched dream,” Takerufuji expressed gratitude for the support that propelled him to this remarkable feat.

Hailing from Aomori in northern Japan, Takerufuji’s rapid ascent in the sport has been underscored by an impressive record, with just 10 losses in 79 fights since his professional debut in September 2022.

Even as he basks in the glory of his achievement, Takerufuji’s journey is only beginning, with the promise of further triumphs on the horizon for this rising sumo star.

In a symbolic presentation, Takerufuji was awarded a towering silver trophy, adorned in his signature purple loincloth, symbolizing his remarkable triumph amidst adversity.

With his ankle bandaged and his frame bespeckled with dirt, Takerufuji stands as a testament to resilience and determination, embodying the essence of sumo’s storied legacy.
