ISLAMABAD: Two Swedish brothers have been found guilty on the charge of spying for Russia’s GRU military intel agency. The eldest brother is facing life imprisonment.

According to a district court in Sweden’s capital Stockholm, the two men had got hold of 100 classified documents on GRU’s behalf.

The source of the documents was Sweden’s intelligence and security service. They had been arrested in September 2021.

Sibling provided intel Agency to Sweden’s biggest threat Russia

The older brother, who is facing a life term, accessed the files while working at the security service. Whereas the younger of the two brothers had handled the GRU’s contact, the court verdict further revealed.

The verdict coincides with Sweden and Finland’s membership bid to join the NATO alliance in the wake of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

The court’s senior judge Mans Wigen stated that the older brother’s espionage act falls into the most-grave category of offense as he was fully aware of the harm it would cause. Through his actions, he provided information to the country which poses the biggest threat to the security of Sweden.
