SYDNEY: Australia’s squad for June’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and USA has been finalized, with former captain Steve Smith notably absent. Smith’s exclusion follows a dip in form against New Zealand in February, where he managed scores of only 11 and four. Additionally, promising batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk has been left out, while all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will lead the team and seasoned opener David Warner secures a spot, possibly marking his last international tournament.

Selection chief George Bailey emphasized the importance of achieving the optimal balance in the final 15 for success in the campaign, mentioning extensive deliberations regarding Smith’s inclusion. Bailey expressed interest in monitoring Fraser-McGurk, 22, who has showcased impressive performances for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.

The squad features experienced players such as Test captain Pat Cummins, fast bowler Mitchell Starc, and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell. Notably, 11 members of the squad contributed to Australia’s triumph in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Australia T20 World Cup squad:

Mitchell Marsh (capt), Ashton Agar, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Travis Head, Josh Inglis,  Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, David Warner, Adam Zampa.
