ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Leader Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, backed by allied parties, has been elected as the deputy speaker of the National Assembly (NA) on Friday.

Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah secured 197 votes, while his opponent, Junaid Akbar, backed by the PTI, got 92 votes out of a total of 291. Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah was a joint candidate of PPP and PML-N, and supported by the MQM-Pakistan.

The newly-elected National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq administered the oath to Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah. The election for the NA deputy speaker was conducted through a secret ballot.

Earlier in the day, PML-N’s Sardar Ayaz Sadiq emerged victorious as the new National Assembly speaker with 199 votes out of 291. Outgoing speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf announced the results, revealing that one vote was deemed invalid, while the rest were declared valid. Sadiq’s opponent, PTI-backed Amir Dogar, secured 91 votes.

It’s worth noting that PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif nominated Sardar Ayaz Sadiq for the speaker’s position, while Ghulam Mustafa Shah was put forward by Bilawal Bhutto for the role of Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.
