Taraneh Alidoosti: Iran Frees Oscar-winning Actress

TEHRAN: Iranian officials have freed on bail famous actress Taraneh Alidoosti following holding her for three weeks over her support for the protests in the country, her lawyer said on Wednesday.

According to Arab news, she is one of Iranian cinema’s most acclaimed actress, winning world renown for performances in award winning movies including the Oscar-winning 2016 film “The Salesman.”

Taraneh Alidoosti’s lawyer Zahra Minooee told the media that her client was released on bail today. According to media reports leading figures from the Iranian film industry welcomed her, including directors Saeed Roustayi and Mani Haghighi. The Cannes Film Festival also tweeted over the matter and said that actress Taraneh Alidoosti freed after 3 weeks in detention.

 The actress was arrested on December 17 after making a string of social media messages supporting the protests and condemning the execution in Iran. More than 600 artists including actors Mark Rylance and Kate Winslet had signed an open letter calling for Taraneh Alidoosti’s release.

Iran has been gripped by protest demonstration since the September 16 death in custody of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for allegedly violating Iran’s dress code.
