ISLAMABAD: With 5.809 million acre-feet (MAF) of water in the Tarbela Dam, the large water reservoir has been filled to its maximum level of 1550 feet above mean sea level, which is a promising sign for Pakistani agriculture and the future production of hydel electricity.

As it releases the stored water for agriculture, reduces floods, and supplies affordable Hydel energy to the National Grid, the Tarbela Dam is recognized as an iconic project that has contributed to the development of Pakistan.

The live water storage capacity of Tarbela Reservoir is 5.809 MAF. Tarbela is Pakistan’s largest electricity-generating facility, with a 4888 megawatt (MW) installed capacity that will rise to 6418 MW upon completing the Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project.

According to the hydrological data, the river flows, outflows, and the reservoir level at Mangla, Tarbela, and Chashma, along with the situation of water at the barrages today as under:  Kabul at Nowshehra: Outflows 40900 cusecs and Inflows 40900 cusecs, Khairabad Bridge: Outflow 222700 cusecs and Inflows 222700, Jhelum at Mangla: Outflows 10000 cusecs and Inflows 31500 cusecs, Chenab at Marala: Outflows 54300 cusecs and Inflows 83200 cusecs.

Reservoirs (Storage and Level)

Chashma: Minimum operating level 638.15 feet, present level 644.00 feet, maximum conservation level 649 feet, live storage today 0.100 MAF.

Mangla: Minimum operating level 1050 feet, present level 1238.15 feet, maximum conservation level 1242 feet, live storage today 7.050 MAF.

Tarbela: Minimum operating level 1402 feet, present level 1550.00 feet, maximum conservation level 1550 feet, live storage today 5.809 MAF.

The inflows and outflows of River Indus at Chashma, Tarbela, and Jinnah, River Jhelum at Mangla, and River Kabul at Nowshera have been reflected as mean flows of 24 hours, whereas the other flows have been gauged at 6.00 a.m. —APP
