BAKU: Three people were killed, and two dozen others sustained injuries in an explosion occurred at a furniture workshop in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, on Monday, according to officials. Dramatic scenes unfolded as rescuers worked to extract a man from the debris of a burnt-out building, as seen in videos shared by the emergencies ministry. Firefighters tirelessly combed through the wreckage in the aftermath of the incident.

The prosecutor’s office confirmed the discovery of three bodies under the rubble, and 24 persons suffered injuries of varying degrees due to the blast. While the cause of the explosion remains unclear, authorities have initiated a criminal investigation focusing on a potential breach of “fire safety regulations.”

This incident follows closely on the heels of a devastating fire at a maternity clinic in Baku just a week ago, which claimed the lives of four infants. President Ilham Aliyev pledged personal oversight of the investigation into the maternity clinic blaze.

Notably, in April 2022, another tragic incident struck the capital when a gas tank explosion at a nightclub resulted in the death of one person and left 37 others injured.
