GANDHINAGAR: Toyota Motor of Japan is gearing up to introduce vehicles equipped with solid-state batteries that offer faster charging times and extended durability, as revealed by a senior official from its Indian division on Thursday.

These advanced batteries hold the potential to significantly enhance the driving range of electric vehicles (EVs), a pivotal aspect of Toyota’s strategic shift announced in June to regain market share from competitors like Tesla and Chinese companies such as BYD in the EV industry.

In collaboration with oil refiner Idemitsu Kosan, Toyota had announced plans last year to jointly develop and mass-produce all-solid-state batteries, targeting commercialization in 2027 and 2028, with full-scale production to follow.

“The solid-state batteries can be charged in 10 minutes and have a range of 1,200 km (750 miles),” Vikram Gulati, country head of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, told an investment summit in the western state of Gujarat.
