KHAN YUNIS, PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES: Tanks churn through the mud between bombed-out buildings in Gaza’s main southern city of Khan Yunis, now the epicentre of the fighting, as gunfire and explosions reverberate in the distance.

Piles of rubble tower near the entrance to a tunnel, part of the underground labyrinth the military dubs the “Gaza Metro” and where it claims Palestinian group members are hiding out and holding hostages.

Military concentrates operations in Khan Yunis

In the bloodiest ever Gaza war, now in its fourth month, the military has concentrated its operations in Khan Yunis, the hometown of Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar, the alleged architect of the 7 October surprise attack on Israel.

The Israeli security forces recently led a group of journalists through a long tunnel it stated had been dug below the city, much of which lies in ruins after weeks of heavy combat and bombing, according to western media.

Taken below ground, journalists were told they were walking through a tunnel hundreds of metres long leading towards a cemetery.

According to the latest update from the health ministry in Gaza around 26,637 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the war started out between Hamas and Israel on October 7.
