KYIV: Turkey will participate in the upcoming Ukraine peace talks scheduled to be held in Malta from October 28-29, confirmed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after a conversation with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Mediterranean island of Malta will host the talks regarding Ukraine peace. President Zelensky expressed his optimism about Turkey’s involvement, stating, “Turkey will participate, adding its authoritative voice and stance” to the peace talks. Notably, Russia is not expected to be part of these discussions, which Zelensky hopes will garner international support for his peace plan amid the ongoing conflict.

Russia and Ukraine Gearing up for Challenging Winter

Both Russia and Ukraine are gearing up for a challenging winter, with Ukraine warning of potential strikes on its energy infrastructure and Russia attempting to suppress a Ukrainian counteroffensive. Turkey has positioned itself as a mediator between the warring parties. Turkey previously brokered a deal in July last year, enabling safe grain exports via the Black Sea. However, the agreement collapsed less than a year later after Russia withdrew its participation.

Turkey’s willingness to engage in the new round of peace talks underscores the country’s commitment to facilitating a resolution to the Ukraine conflict.
