TEHRAN: Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, claimed on Saturday that the United States stands isolated on the Gaza issue after it blocked a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Speaking exclusively to Anadolu and Turkish national broadcaster TRT during an interview in Washington, D.C., Fidan revealed that the international community, particularly Turkey’s allies, expressed solidarity in their disapproval of the US stance.

Turkish Foreign Minister, along with counterparts from various Arab and Islamic nations, had been assigned the task of pressing for a ceasefire in Gaza after a joint extraordinary summit. The summit aimed to take international action to halt the ongoing conflict in Gaza and achieve a lasting peace.

Over 17,700 Palestinians Killed in Gaza

The conflict in Gaza erupted on October 7 when Israel launched a military campaign in response to the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm by Hamas-led Palestinian Resistance groups. The campaign, part of Israel’s longstanding actions against Palestinians, has resulted in over 17,700 deaths of innocent Palestinians, mostly women and children, with more than 46,480 others injured.

Fidan’s remarks follow the US veto of a proposed UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. While Britain abstained from the vote, thirteen other members of the UN Security Council supported the resolution.

The United States, along with Israel, opposes a ceasefire, arguing that it would only benefit Hamas.
