Twitter Announces New Controls for Ads Placements

ISLAMABAD/SAN FRANCISCO: Social media microblogging website Twitter has announced to roll out new controls for the placement of advertisements, enabling companies and brands to prevent their ads from appearing above or below offensive tweets.  

The social media platform announced the new controls to lure back advertisers who pulled off ads under the pressure of civil rights groups that said that hate speech has risen on the social media platform after Elon Musk reinstated suspended accounts since his acquisition of the microblogging website.

Twitter earns around 90 per cent of its revenue from selling digital advertisements. Social media platform witnessed a massive drop in ads after civil rights groups pressured large companies and brands to pause their ads on the platform.

Earlier, Musk also confessed that social media platform witnessed a massive drop in revenue after large companies held back ads and almost boycotted the website for the publicity of their brands.

In an email to the advertising industry group, the social media platform said that it was considering bringing its content moderators in-house to allow the platform to invest more in moderation for non-English languages, Reuters said in a report.

Earlier, Ella Irwin, Twitter’s new head of trust, said the platform would lean more heavily on automated content moderation.

Twitter also said that it removed ads from profiles, as reported by Washington Post on Tuesday, which noted that offensive ads had appeared on the social media platform accounts of white nationalists.

Twitter also said that a revamped version of Twitter’s subscription service called social media platform Blue would begin rolling out on Friday.

The Twitter Blu subscription will allow accounts to receive a verified check mark as individuals will get a blue check, while business and government accounts will get gold and gray check marks. Thesocial media platform Blue subscription price will be $7 per month on the web and $11 per month on Apple devices.
