DUBAI: The New Zealand government has asked Twitter to remove the latest uploaded videos of the Christchurch Mosque terror attacks. Videos of the shootings were circulating again on the social media site.

The videos, which Twitter initially failed to recognize as harmful, were filmed by the Australian white supremacist who martyred 51 Muslim worshippers in two separate mosques in Christchurch back in 2019.

The Guardian daily newspaper reported that the video clips resurfaced after some Twitter users uploaded them again.

Following the move, the New Zealand government raised the issue with Twitter to remove the footage related to the terror attacks. New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Arden’s spokesperson said that the social media company’s automated reporting function initially failed to pick up the videos as harmful. “Overnight, Twitter advised us that the videos had been removed, adding that they would carry out a sweep to detect other instances.

New Zealand Prime Minister Arden Launches Christchurch Call Campaign

In 2019, the Australian white supremacist terrorist live-streamed videos of his attacks on mosques on multiple social media sites.

While responding to the attack, New Zealand Prime Minister Arden started the Christchurch Call campaign, requesting all social media platforms to counter online misinformation and extremism. Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter, supported PM Arden’s initiative.
