Brussels Shooting: Police Arrest Suspected Murderer

BRUSSELS: Belgian police on Tuesday arrested a man suspected of killing two Swedish nationals in an attack in Brussels, said a police official.

Spokesman for the federal prosecutors’ service Eric Van Duyse told media that police officers opened fire as they arrested the man in the Schaerbeek area of the city, but did not say if the suspect was injured.

Earlier the suspect after killing two Swedish nationals in Brussels fled from the scene.

Belgian premier Alexander De Croo termed the shooting as an act of terrorism.

De Croo in a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, offered his condolences to the Swedish PM over the attack on Swedish citizens in Brussels.

He added that Belgium and Sweden are close partners in fight against terrorism.

Many Belgian media outlets said the two individuals assassinated, were wearing football shirts of the Swedish national team. The incident occurred ahead of a football match between Sweden and Belgium.

The Group F European qualifier match between the two states was suspended at half-time because of the shooting incident.

According to Belgian media the Swedish players were not interested to finish the match after the attack.

The European Commission president while condemning the attack expressed solidarity with the bereaved families.

Ursula von der Leyen in a post on X extended her heartfelt support to the Belgian police, so they arrest the suspect swiftly. She said that whole Europe is united against terror.

Several European Union (EU) offices are located in Brussels including the commission, the European Council and the European Parliament.
