TOKYO, Japan: Sultan Al Jaber, the UAE’s Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, met with Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko in Tokyo on Monday in the first ministerial-level meeting under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Initiative.

In their meeting, Kamikawa began by expressing her pleasure at their first meeting and conveyed her heartfelt gratitude for the congratulatory message she received upon her appointment as Japan’s Foreign Minister on September 13. She also appreciated the UAE’s consistent supply of crude oil to Japan and their long-standing support for Japanese companies in upstream development. Kamikawa additionally sought the UAE’s assistance in stabilizing the crude oil market and exploring potential production increases.

In response, Al Jaber congratulated Kamikawa on her new role and expressed his desire to establish a direct and robust dialogue, fostering a deeper strategic partnership between their countries.

The ministers engaged in discussions regarding the “Japan-UAE Innovation Partnership” and the concept of the “Global Green Energy Hub,” which were previously explored during Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio’s recent visit to the UAE.

Kamikawa thanked Minister Jaber for his support during Prime Minister Kishida’s visit to the UAE in July, emphasizing the fruitful outcomes of the trip. She underscored Japan’s commitment to its strategic partnership with the UAE and expressed eagerness to enhance bilateral cooperation across various domains while addressing regional and global challenges in the Middle East.

Minister Jaber reciprocated these sentiments and expressed strong aspirations for bolstering bilateral ties with Japan.

Kamikawa highlighted Japan’s dedication to the success of COP28, scheduled to occur in the UAE from November 30 to December 12. As the COP28 President-Designate, Minister Jaber updated her on the preparations for the event and looked forward to Japan’s valuable contributions.

The ministers also discussed cooperation in defence, international affairs – including matters related to the UN Security Council – expos, and various other topics of mutual interest.

The ministerial-level meeting under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Initiative (CSPI) was established following the signing of the “Joint Declaration on the Implementation of the CSPI” between Japan and the UAE in September 2022. Both ministers affirmed their commitment to continue utilizing the CSPI framework as a platform for ongoing consultation and collaboration between their nations.
