ISLAMABAD: British High Commissioner Jane Marriott CMG OBE on Tuesday urged mid-career Pakistanis to apply for a life-changing Chevening scholarship to study in the United Kingdom (UK).

This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the Chevening Awards. Since 1983, more than 2,000 Pakistanis have been awarded Chevening scholarships and fellowships.

Chevening is the United Kingdom’s global scholarship program, enabling outstanding emerging leaders to pursue 1-year master’s degrees in any subject and at any British university. Pakistan has several notable Chevening alumni, including Justice Athar Minnalah of the Supreme Court; sports journalist Roha Nadeem; actor and caretaker Federal Minister Jamal Shah; and Sonia Shamroz, the first-ever female to be appointed as district police chief in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The scholarships are fully funded, including flights, visas, fees, accommodation and some spending money.

Applications for Chevening scholarships to study in the United Kingdom are open between 12 September and 7 November 2023. Candidates can apply on the Chevening website www.chevening.org.

British envoy Jane Marriott CMG OBE, said that home to some of the best universities in the world, the United Kingdom is a top destination for hundreds of thousands of students each year. Chevening scholarships not only let some of Pakistan’s brightest scholars benefit from the British education, but it also gave them a true experience of Britain and build important networks.

She said that Chevening scholarships have already had a significant impact on thousands of Pakistani professionals.

Two new scholarship opportunities

This year, there are also two new partnerships. Essex University is offering two places on climate change and the environment, as well as heritage and museum studies, while Swindon Town Football Club (STFC) are offering sports professionals the opportunity to study for a master’s program in Coaching and Sports Sciences.

In addition to the one-year master’s program, there is the South Asia Journalism Program (SAJP) hosted by the University of Westminster.

It is aimed at mid-career journalists from South Asian nations, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.

As many as seven journalists from Pakistan will be selected for the ‘Good Governance in a Changing World: the Media, Politics, and Society’ fellowship.

These fellows will participate in 8 intensive weeks of lectures, discussions, and visits that introduce them to important UK media, academics, and political figures in the field.

They will spend time meeting their peers in some of the United Kingdom’s top media organisations.
