LONDON: The leader of the UK’s main opposition Labour Party said on Monday that Israel must not go ahead with a military offensive in the Gazan city of Rafah.

Keir Starmer’s comments came soon after the Israeli military asked Palestinian civilians in the area to leave before a planned offensive.

“With more than a million Palestinian civilians sheltering in Rafah, an Israeli offensive must not go ahead,” Starmer wrote on X.

He called upon all parties to reach an immediate ceasefire and release all hostages, while allowing unimpeded aid into Gaza that can be delivered regularly, safely and quickly.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has warned that they are planning a powerful operation very soon in Rafah.

Earlier, Shadow Foreign Secretary of Labour Party David Lammy, in a post on X said that an invasion of Rafah would be catastrophic.

Shadow International Development Secretary Lisa Nandy also warned that people trapped in Rafah have no other place to go.

According to the Gaza health ministry over 34,600 Palestinians have been killed mostly women and children in brutal Israeli strikes since October 7. Similarly, more than 78,000 people including women and children have been wounded in Israel’s air strikes.
