KYIV: Ukrainian troops have successfully captured crucial heights around the eastern city of Bakhmut, as the country continues its counteroffensive against the ongoing conflict, announced Kyiv on Monday.

Deputy Defence Minister Ganna Malyar stated that Ukrainian forces, in recent days, have gained control over strategic high ground positions that overlook the entrances, exits, and movements of the enemy in the vicinity of Bakhmut. Malyar shared the update on Telegram, stating, “During the process of advancing, our troops took control of key commanding heights around Bakhmut.”

In May, Russian forces, along with fighters from the Wagner mercenary group, declared their capture of Bakhmut after months of intense fighting, resulting in the devastation of the once-thriving town that was once home to approximately 80,000 people. In response to the occupation, Ukraine had been preparing for a counteroffensive, accumulating Western weaponry and bolstering its offensive capabilities.

Significance of Capturing Key Height Around Bakhmut

In recent weeks, Ukrainian forces have been gradually encircling the city, meticulously advancing along the flanks, and securing strategic positions. The capture of key heights around Bakhmut marks a significant achievement for the Ukrainian military, as it enhances their ability to monitor and control enemy movements in the region.

These gains reinforce Ukraine’s determination to regain control over the territory and push back against the ongoing aggression. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia, which began in 2014 following Russia’s annexation of Crimea, has resulted in a devastating toll on both sides.
