KYIV: Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal on Friday said Kyiv has received a $1.5 billion tranche of finances under a World Bank initiative.

He added that the tranche will help Ukraine to pay for its social spending and budget as it fights a war against Russian.

Ukraine is depending on financial assistance from its Western partners but foreign financing reduced in the first two months of this year, and Republicans in US Congress blocked the aid package for months.

According to the Finance Ministry, in March, Kyiv managed to get about $9 billion in total external financing, from the European Union, Canada, Japan, the International Monetary Fund and Britain.

Shmyhal said the new World Bank aid was financed by Britain and Japan.

In a post on social media platform X, he said $ 984 million come from Japan and $ 516 million from the UK. He added the funds will cover budget spending for humanitarian and social needs and reconstruction.

Earlier in March, Ukraine received a $4.9 billion first tranche of finding under a European Union finance programme.

Kyiv spends most of its own resources to finance its defence requirements since Russia started a war in February 2022, leaving Kyiv heavily depended on funding from Western partners.

The ministry added that in 2024, foreign financing reached $10.2 billion, and since the start of the full-scale war – $83.8 billion. International assistance is aimed to finance the social expenditures of Ukraine.
