HAGUE: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has agreed to consider Ukraine’s request regarding its responsibility for Russia’s allegations of genocide, a claim used by Moscow to justify its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The ICJ, the highest judicial body of the United Nations, announced that it has jurisdiction to adjudicate on the matter brought forth by Kyiv. This decision marks a significant development in the ongoing legal dispute between Ukraine and Russia.

Kyiv’s request seeks a declaration from the court stating that Ukraine is not accountable for Russia’s accusations of genocide, which were cited by the Kremlin as a pretext for its military intervention in Ukraine. This move underscores Ukraine’s efforts to refute Moscow’s narrative and defend its sovereignty on the international stage.

The ICJ’s decision to entertain Ukraine’s plea opens the door for a thorough examination of the legal arguments presented by both parties. The outcome of this case has the potential to have far-reaching implications for international law and the resolution of conflicts between sovereign states.
