NEW YORK: A senior United Nations (UN) official said on Saturday that the military government of Myanmar is using the death penalty to crush opposition as 130 political opponents awarded capital punishment since 2021.

Volker Turk, United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights added that as many as seven students of the University were sentenced to death. The UN High Commissioner said that some reports suggest that capital punishment was awarded to more activists on Thursday.

UN and Myanmar’s Government Death Penalty

The UN Commissioner said that all executions should be suspended immediately. Volker Turk said that the Myanmar’s army is running secret courts and termed it a violation of basic rights. The UN official said that the military government of Myanmar used such tactics as a tool for political gains and to crush the opposition parties and political workers.

UN and Students

According to the student union of Dagon University, as many as seven students had been sentenced to death. The Union said that the students were arrested by the authorities in April.

Reports said that at least 2000 people have been killed in Myanmar since the military came into power in the country. The military-run government had hanged four political workers in July. Western nations and ASEAN condemned these acts of Myanmar’s government.
