New York: The UN Security Council (UNSC) has rejected a Moscow-drafted resolution seeking an independent probe into the sabotage of 2022 of the Nord Stream gas pipelines.

Western nations have blamed the blasts under the Baltic Sea on Moscow, but Russia has accused the Western countries of sabotage. The resolution got 3 votes, with Brazil and China backing Moscow and the other 12 members of the UNSC abstaining.

The resolution seeks the formation of a commission to “conduct” an impartial investigation of all aspects of the sabotage act on the Nord Stream gas pipelines, including the identification of its attackers and organizers. Moscow said it had been left out of inquiries launched by Germany, Denmark, and Sweden all of which have dismissed the accusation.

Russia’s envoy Vassily Nebenzia said that they have serious doubts as to the transparency of investigations conducted by some Western nations over the matter. He pointed to ” suspicions” that the three investigations aimed “not to expose the acts of sabotage, but rather to try to hide evidence. The envoy thought following today’s vote, doubt as to who is behind the sabotage is just obvious.

However, Deputy US envoy Robert Wood said that it was an effort to discredit the work of current national probes and bias any deductions they reached that do not bear to Moscow’s programmed and political narrative.

The blasts that struct the Nord Stream gas pipelines, the responsibility for the explosions remains a mystery. The US has also completely rejected a report by veteran investigative reporter Seymour Hersh that United States Navy divers helped by Norway planted blasts on the pipelines in 2022.
