US: 16 Killed, Over 50 Injured in Maine Mass Shooting

WASHINGTON: As many as 16 people were killed and more than 50 wounded on Wednesday in mass shootings in Lewiston, Maine, American media reported.  CNN quoted multiple law enforcement sources as saying that 16 people were killed and more than 50 wounded in the shooting.

Earlier, Maine State Police reported about the presence of an active shooter but did not give more details over the development.

“There is an active shooter in Lewiston, Maine” police said on the social media account known as X. “We ask people in the area to shelter in place. Stay inside your houses with the doors locked. Law enforcement officials is investigating the shooter at multiple areas.” The officials also posted two photographs of a suspect on social media, adding he was at large.

The officials asked for the public’s support in identifying the suspect, a man in a long-sleeved shirt and jeans holding a gun in the firing position.

In a statement, the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston said it was “reacting to a mass shooting” and coordinating with local hospitals to take patients.
