WASHINGTON: The US Congress has imposed a ban on congressional staffers’ use of Microsoft’s Copilot, the firm’s generative artificial intelligence assistant, local media reported on Saturday. The House’s Chief Administrative Officer Catherine Szpindor said that the application has been considered by the Office of Cybersecurity to be a risk to consumers due to the threat of leaking House data.

However, Microsoft did not issue any statement or comment over the development. The decision is the latest example of policymakers looking at likely risks in federal department adoption of AI along with the adequacy of safety measures to protect consumers privacy and also ensure fair treatment.

Earlier, regulators in the US identified the use of AI as a vulnerability in the financial system for the first time. The Financial Stability Oversight Council recommended to observe “rapid developments in AI to ensure that oversight structures keep up with or stay ahead of producing risks to the financial system.
