WASHINGTON: US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy has said legislators will move forward with a proposed legislation to address national security issues regarding TikTok, accusing Beijing had access to the data of users of video app.

TikTok Bill

In the United States, there are growing demands and calls in order to ban the social media app TikTok, owned by a China-based firm or to adopt bipartisan law to empower Biden’s administration to seek a ban. Digital Devices owned by the government in the US were recently banned from having the social media app installed.

“The US House of Representatives will be moving forward with the proposed legislation to secure citizens from the technological tentacles of the app,” McCarthy said.

CEO of TikTok Shou Zi Chew appeared before a Committee of US House for about 5 hours on Thursday, and legislators from both political parties grilled him regarding national security concerns involving the social media app, which has over 150 million American users.

On Thursday’s hearing, the TikTok top official was asked if of the app, has spied on US citizens at China’s request. The CEO answered, “No.”
McCarthy said in a tweet, “It is very concerning that the Chief Executive Officer of TikTok cannot be honest and acknowledge what we already know.”

Many Democrats lawmakers also have raised concerns although have not yet explicitly supported a U.S. ban.
