WASHINGTON: The White House said on Tuesday it was hopeful Israel and Palestinian group Hamas could “close the remaining gaps” in their ceasefire talks, adding that Israel said its military operation in Gaza’s Rafah was limited in scope.

US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said that the two sides, along with mediator Qatar and CIA chief Bill Burns, could make progress towards resolving the crisis during talks in Cairo.

Kirby noted that the presence of key stakeholders at the negotiating table signaled an advanced stage in the Gaza truce talks. While acknowledging the complexities involved, he emphasized the administration’s commitment to supporting the negotiation process. However, Kirby cautioned against premature expectations, underscoring the unpredictable nature of diplomatic negotiations.

Israel Warns of Deeper Gaza Operation

Meanwhile, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant warned of Israel’s readiness to intensify its military operation in Gaza if truce talks fail to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. Gallant emphasized Israel’s willingness to make concessions for the safe return of the hostages but underscored the nation’s resolve to escalate the operation if necessary.

Following an overnight incursion into southern Gaza, Israel conveyed to Washington that its operation in Rafah was aimed at curbing Hamas’s ability to smuggle weapons into the region. The Israeli military described the operation as limited in scope, scale, and duration.

Israel’s Delegation in Cairo for Talks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Tuesday that Israeli negotiators had arrived in Cairo for talks on a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. Netanyahu emphasized Israel’s firm stance on the conditions necessary for the release of Israeli hostages. He underscored the need of ensuring Israel’s security in any negotiated agreement.

The negotiations come after Hamas announced its acceptance of a ceasefire plan proposed by mediators Egypt and Qatar, signaling a potential breakthrough in the protracted conflict. However, the outcome of the talks remains uncertain.

Since October 7, Israel has launched relentless bombardment campaign in Gaza killed more than 34,789 Palestinians, mostly women and children, the territory’s health ministry reported.
