US President Underlines Support for Jordan: White House

WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden on Thursday underscored his support for the “status quo” of Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in a meeting with Jordanian King Abdullah II at the White House.

The White House said that President Joe Biden, King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Hussein had held a private lunch. On the occasion, the US president reaffirmed the close friendship between the US and Jordan,” the White House added.

White House said that US President Biden recognized Jordan’s important role as the custodian of Muslim holy places in Jerusalem.

On the Palestinian- Israeli conflict, the US President reiterated the US stance of support for a two-state solution. He also thanked King Abdullah for his role he and Jordan play for the stability in the Arab world.

Al-Aqsa Mosque is the 3rd holiest place in Islam. Under a status quo, non-Muslims can also visit the holy site at specific times but are not permitted to pray there. Israel’s extremist national security minister also visited to the site, sparking a torrent of worldwide condemnation.
