WASHINGTON:  The United States on Sunday will announce an additional 100 million dollars in assistance to respond to the conflict in Sudan, as Washington seeks to spur global response ahead of Monday’s anniversary of the war.

United States Agency for International Development Administrator Samantha Power said that the additional funding would go toward emergency food aid, nutrition support and other life-saving assistance, according to US media.

Power is also set to urge the warring parties to stop hindering humanitarian access and participate in good faith talks to reach a ceasefire in order to prevent famine and further suffering.

War in Sudan

War started in Sudan on April 15, 2023, between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, destroying the country’s infrastructure.

Thousands of civilians have been perished, although death toll estimates are very uncertain, and both sides have been accused of committing war crimes.

The conflict has pushed millions into extreme hunger, leading to the world’s largest displacement crisis, and triggered waves of ethnically driven murders and sexual violence in the Darfur region of western Sudan.

Washington’s announcement of further aid comes ahead of a humanitarian conference in France on April 15. The United States has called on partners around the world to put greater priority on the war in Sudan and step up with further funding at the conference.
