WASHINGTON: The United States on Thursday called upon the world to care more about the brutal war in Sudan and hoped for a resumption of peace talks soon.

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield said as communities in Sudan move towards famine, cholera and measles spread, amid violence, the world has largely remained silent.

Talking to reporters in Washington she said that the world must change its approach adding that the global community must do more and it has to care more about Sudan.

A rift between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces converted into full fledged war on April 15 in 2023. Thousands have been killed in war and millions are displaced.

She added the war in Gaza has overshadowed the Sudan conflict.

Thomas-Greenfield regretted that just five percent of a UN humanitarian appeal on Sudan could be met, forcing cutbacks in aid to refugees. She said the United States will be increasing its funding in the coming days.

France is set to lead an international humanitarian conference for Sudan on Monday.

Tom Perriello, the US special envoy for Sudan, expressed hope to use the Paris conference to begin new talks between the two sides.

Perriello said the war in Sudan is getting even worse with regional implications.
