Violent Confrontation Erupts Between Fans, Police Following Croatia Cup Semifinals

SPLIT, Croatia: According to local media reports, approximately 50 individuals have been apprehended and numerous others sustained injuries during riots sparked by football enthusiasts subsequent to Dinamo Zagreb’s 1-0 victory over Hajduk Split in the Croatia Cup semi-finals on Wednesday in Split.

The disturbance escalated post-match as spectators stormed the field, leading to violence both inside and outside the stadium, persisting late into the night. Law enforcement authorities disclosed that 51 individuals were detained, while eight police officers sustained injuries during altercations with fans.

In a statement to Croatian media, the police reported that substantial groups launched attacks by hurling lit flares, bottles, stones, and various objects at them. Additionally, numerous trash containers were ignited, necessitating fire department intervention, and resulting in concerns among citizens for their parked vehicles, with one official vehicle also sustaining damage.

Split Mayor Ivica Puljak unequivocally condemned the violence and property destruction witnessed in and around the stadium, expressing regret for the distressing scenes and hoping for their non-recurrence in the city. Dinamo’s consecutive victories over Hajduk Split, dubbed the “Eternal Derby” in Croatia, culminated in securing a spot in the Croatia Cup final, with their forthcoming match against Rijeka scheduled for May 15.
