WAPDA Reviews Land Issues of Mohmand, Diamer Basha Dams

ISLAMABAD: The Implementation Committee on Mohmand and Diamer Basha Dams, formed by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, held a meeting on Thursday to discuss the status of land acquisition and resettlement of the affected people of the projects.

The WAPDA Chairman commended the progress made by the sub-committee and expressed hope that the remaining problems would also be resolved soon.

He said that WAPDA was very compassionate for the people who were affected by the mega projects and valued their sacrifices.

The Commissioner of the Diamer-Astore Division briefed the meeting about the progress of the projects.

During the meeting, the compliance status of the decisions made by the Implementation Committee was also discussed.

Progress on Construction of Dams

The meeting was told that the Diamer Basha Dam, being constructed on the River Indus, will store 8.1 MAF of water and generate 4500 MW of hydel electricity. It is likely to be completed by 2028. Mohmand Dam, being constructed on River Swat, will store 1.2 MAF of water and generate eight hundred MW of hydel electricity. It is likely to be completed by 2026.

The meeting, chaired by WAPDA Chairman Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd), was attended by key officials from Gilgit Baltistan (GB), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Finance Division, PM Office, and WAPDA.
