NEW YORK: WhatsApp, a prominent messaging app owned by Meta, has introduced a new feature called “Events,” designed to streamline the organization of virtual and in-person gatherings within groups. According to reports from The Verge, this new feature aims to simplify the process of planning meetings, parties, and other events similar to e-vite services that send out invitations via email.

The “Events” feature allows members of a group to create and manage events directly within the WhatsApp platform. Once set up, the event is pinned to the group’s information page and includes its own dedicated chat thread. This enables group members to view important details such as attendee lists, RSVP status, and contributions like refreshments.

In addition to introducing the “Events” feature, WhatsApp has enhanced its functionality for “Announcement Groups.” Now, members can reply to announcements, providing feedback and comments without inundating the chat with constant notifications. This update also includes muting the conversation and minimizing replies, allowing users to engage in discussions without causing interruptions to other group members.

The rollout of the “Events” feature will initially debut on WhatsApp Communities, a feature reminiscent of platforms like Slack or Discord. WhatsApp Communities offers dedicated message threads, group administration tools, and announcement functions. It leverages WhatsApp’s existing capabilities, including its 32-person video calling feature, to facilitate seamless communication within groups.

This latest development underscores WhatsApp’s commitment to enhancing user experience and providing robust tools for community engagement and event coordination.
