CALIFORNIA: American actor Will Smith has said that he understood that people may not be lining up to see his first movie after he slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars in March 2022.

In a recent interview with Fox 5, the actor said, “I completely understand that. I would unquestionably respect someone’s need for time and space if they weren’t prepared.

Smith, whose new movie Emancipation is ready to hit theatres on December 9, said that his team will be let down if people eschew watching his movie over his earlier actions.

“I hope that my team doesn’t suffer any consequences for what I did. I believe that everyone has produced such amazing work. I definitely lose a few hours of sleep every night worrying that I might have fined my team, but I’ll do everything in my power to ensure that everyone is given the credit they deserve.

In March of this year, while Rock, 57, was presenting an award at the Oscars, Smith, 54, slapped him. Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith has alopecia, which is why she is bald, so when Rock made fun of it, the actor charged onto the stage, smacked Rock in the face, and then went back to his seat.

The day after the Oscars, he posted his first public apology online. He expressed his desire to publicly apologise to Chris in a post on Instagram. I made a mistake and stepped out of line. I feel ashamed because they did not reflect the kind of man I aspire to be. Violence has no place in a society that values kindness and love.

Prior to being available for streaming on Apple TV+ starting December 9, Emancipation will debut in a few theatres on December 2.
