Woman Hit by Royal Police Escort Motorbike Dies

LONDON: A woman hit by a police motorbike escorting the Duchess of Edinburgh has died, her family confirmed.

Helen Holland from Birchanger in Essex was struck at the junction of West Cromwell Road and Warwick Road in Earl’s Court on 10 May.

According to the BBC, her family said the 81-year-old fought “for her life for nearly two weeks… but irreversible harm to her brain finally ended the battle today”.

An investigation into the crash by the royal police watchdog is ongoing.

Buckingham Palace lastly said Sophie the Duchess of Edinburgh’s “heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the wounded lady and her family”.

Holland had been in London visiting her sister during the crash.

Following the crash, the family said she was in a coma, and on Friday, the royal police said that she remained in critical condition.

Announcing her death, her son, Martin Holland, said his mother had died after “suffering broken bones and huge internal injuries”.

The Police Office Conduct said, as part of its investigation into the incident, CCTV from nearby locations and police body camera footage would be examined.

It added that officers on the scene would be interviewed and appealed for other witnesses.

The body said it had been in touch with Holland’s family to “explain our role and would keep them regularly updated as the investigation progresses”.
