LONDON: YouTube, one of the world’s leading video streaming platforms, has triggered widespread discontent among its subscribers by announcing a significant price hike for its Premium family plan. This move, marking one of the most substantial increases in years, follows a similar trend seen across various streaming services, including Netflix, Apple TV+, and Disney+.

YouTube’s Premium family plan, allowing six accounts to share a single subscription, will experience a sharp rise in its cost. In the UK, the price will surge by £2, escalating from £17.99 to £19.99. Meanwhile, in the US and Canada, the price will witness a substantial 30% increase, climbing from $17.99 (CA$17.99) to $22.99 (CA$22.99).

YouTube Premium offers users an ad-free experience, the ability to download videos, and the flexibility to watch content while using other apps. The price surge, scheduled to take effect on November 21, has triggered a wave of dissatisfaction among customers, many of whom have taken to social media to express their grievances, with some even threatening to cancel their subscriptions.

YouTube Informs Customers About Price Hike

Customers were informed of the impending price hike via email, where YouTube justified the increase by stating that it was essential to maintain and enhance the uninterrupted viewing experience provided by YouTube Premium.

To address the growing discontent, YouTube has introduced a feedback page, allowing users to share their comments and opinions on the Premium price adjustment.

On social media platforms, disgruntled customers voiced their concerns, with some expressing frustration over the higher cost. One user declared their intention to cancel their YouTube Premium subscription due to the price increase, while another pointed out that the previous price was already perceived as expensive.

Disney+ recently implemented a price hike in the UK, leading some customers to pay up to £36 more annually. Similarly, Netflix increased its fees for UK customers, with some facing monthly costs of up to £17.99.
