WASHINGTON: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is making a critical appeal for ongoing US aid as he arrives in Washington, facing Republican opposition to sustained open-ended backing for Ukraine’s fight against the Russian invasion.

Zelensky is scheduled to address the National Defense University, emphasizing the need for support, with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin providing an introduction. On Tuesday, he is set to meet with President Joe Biden and congressional leaders, including the recently elected Republican House Speaker, amid a shift in sentiment on Ukraine among some factions within the GOP.

Republican senators recently blocked a White House request for $106 billion in emergency aid primarily allocated for Ukraine and Israel. The Republican right-wing, led by potential 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump, has increasingly expressed reservations about Ukraine’s cause, with some advocating for accepting territorial concessions to Russia and bringing the conflict to a close.

Zelensky Aims to Secure US Support for Ukraine

The Republican opposition comes as US aid, described by Biden as integral to the global struggle against President Vladimir Putin’s aggressive autocracy, faces potential expiration. The flow of US assistance, encompassing ammunition, weaponry, and economic and social aid, has played a crucial role in supporting Ukrainian forces throughout the conflict, which enters its third year in February.

Amid the political maneuvering, Zelensky’s visit aims to underscore the United States’ unwavering commitment to Ukraine, emphasizing the existential fight between democratic nations and Putin’s autocratic regime.

Beside meetings with US leaders, Zelensky will address senators and engage with House Speaker Mike Johnson, seeking to navigate the political landscape and secure continued support for Ukraine’s battle against Russian aggression.
