NAIROBI, Kenya: The African Union extends its congratulations to Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the anti-establishment opposition candidate, on his triumph in Senegal’s presidential election.

President Moussa Faki Mahamat praised Faye’s victory and hailed the widespread acceptance of the election results.

Faye secured a decisive victory in the first round of voting, garnering 54.3 percent of the votes, surpassing the hand-picked candidate of the incumbent, Macky Sall. The provisional results indicate a clear mandate for Faye, positioning him for a swift transition to power.

The African Union Commission President conveyed his warm wishes to Faye, expressing confidence in his ability to fulfill the responsibilities of his new role effectively.

Despite facing challenges, including a recent release from prison and the absence of his mentor Ousmane Sonko from the electoral race, Faye emerged victorious, signaling a significant shift in Senegal’s political landscape.

As Senegal prepares for a potential transfer of power, the African Union stands ready to support the nation’s democratic processes and the peaceful transition of leadership.
