Algeria’s President will visit Moscow in May: Presidency

ALGIERS: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune will visit Moscow in May, his office said on Tuesday following he spoke on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Algeria has had good relations with Russia for decades, but Africa’s biggest gas exporter has significant for Europe’s energy supplies in the fallout of war in Ukraine.

Algerian President and President Putin discussed “bilateral ties especially energy cooperation,” the Algerian president office said in a statement.

President Tebboune is also set to visit to France in May, but authorities have not specified which country the President will visit first.

The African country, which pumps gas directly to Italy and Spain through undersea pipelines, has hosted a string of top European officials including French President Macron in August seeking to find alternatives to Moscow energy supplies.

Algeria is also a major buyer of Russian weapons and in 2021 bilateral trade was worth 3 billion US dollars, despite covid-19 pandemic.
