CALIFORNIA, United States: American multinational corporation and semiconductor company Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O) on Tuesday launched a new series of semiconductors for artificial intelligence for business laptops and desktops.

The new chips are likely to be available in platforms from HP (HPQ.N) and Lenovo (0992.HK) in the second quarter of 2024, said AMD in a press release.

AI-enabled PCs are able to run big-language models and apps supported by the technology directly on the device, rather than on the cloud.

AMD said its latest Ryzen PRO 8040 Series was made for business laptops and mobile workstations, while the PRO 8000 Series had a desktop processor for business users.

Experts hope for a possible recovery in the PC market because of the introduction of AI PCs, as consumers would be looking to upgrade their systems with new technologies.

Generative AI technology can be used to run and develop complex AI programs.

In the AI market, AMD faces intense competition from Intel (INTC.O) and Nvidia (NVDA.O). The company is regarded as a leader in graphics processing units (GPUs).

AMD launched the Ryzen 8000G Series of desktop chips in January this year.

On the same day, Nvidia introduced its own AI PC chips – the GeForce RTX SUPER desktop GPUs.

Intel expects to sell approximately 40 million AI PCs in 2024 alone.
