CAIRO: Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit lauded UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese for her unwavering commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip during a meeting held on Monday at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo.

The discussion, which focused on the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza amidst ongoing Israeli violations against civilians, underscored the critical role of international advocacy in raising awareness and seeking solutions to the plight of Palestinians living under occupation.

Albanese, serving as the UN special rapporteur on the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, received commendation from Aboul Gheit for her courageous stance as a global conscience amid what he described as the “silence and indifference of many nations” towards the atrocities committed by Israeli occupying forces.

Gamal Roshdy, the secretary-general’s spokesperson, conveyed Aboul Gheit’s appreciation for Albanese’s dedication to shedding light on the reality of the civilian suffering in Gaza. He emphasized that Israeli actions constituted acts of genocide aimed at collectively punishing the Palestinian population and depriving them of their fundamental rights.

During the meeting, Aboul Gheit expressed solidarity with Albanese, recognizing her resilience in the face of incitement campaigns and accusations of antisemitism. He condemned Israel’s efforts to silence independent voices that exposed the truth about the situation in Gaza, highlighting its tactics of character assassination against those who revealed its falsehoods.
